AIMS

The aim is to develop a cadre of front line skilled / trained personal of geriatric care nursing assistants (care givers), that specializes in home care in family and community sectors. Provide a comprehensive and basic knowledge and awareness related to geriatric care. The need for qualified geriatric nursing assistant / helpers is high, especially in the present

OBJECTIVES

  1. To develop a healthy attitude among elders towards their work and life.
  2. To enhance individual employability.
  3. To reduce unemployment by providing self employment scheme.
  4. To reduce the mismatch between the demand and supply of trained people to serve elder patients.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The contents of this typed brochure is prepared as a syllabus for certificate / Diploma courses in Geriatric Nursing Care, having duration of 6 months for the girls and nursing candidates willing to serve the old age people. This is a job oriented vocational course for girls and students, who could not go for higher studies, but at the same time they have better scope to raise a regular income resource for their day today life, by doing this course.

The syllabus contains 4 theory examinations and one practical examination with due references on different aspects of geriatric nursing, such as qualities required for nursing, attitude towards elder people, first aid, biological changes, personal hygiene, managing elder people, different diseases and the soft corners to be taken towards elders etc are some of them.

Vocational education is concerned with the training on vocation. It is related to productivity and service. Vocational education prepares for various jobs. As such this vocational education in basics of geriatric nursing, field has adequate employment facilities as shown below.

  6. Scope for service in old age homes and even abroad also
  7. Home Nursing Attendant

A study conducted by our institution, has found that, there are a good number of women / girls in Kerala, who can directly involve in geriatric and home nursing field. Another section is, which can be given professional advice to those who want to enter into the nursing field, was also taken into consideration. It is a fact that, there is a lack of trained people in this field. To achieve this goal of talented, dedicated and trained educated geriatric nursing assistants/helpers are inevitable in our society.

At the initial stage of launching this new job oriented vocational course discussions were made with a senior DR. SRI. T. BHASKARAN. BSC. MBBS who agreed to give moral and basic awareness teaching support to the students enrolled through RETC on voluntary basis.

COURSE DETAILS

DIPLOMA IN GERIATRIC / HOME NURSING CARE

Duration - 6 Months
Eligibility - 10 th Passed and above
Age limit - 18 – 45
Medium - English ( contact classes if required in Malayalam also )
( The admission fee / Exam fee / Certification Fee etc goes to the certificate issuing authorities. )

SUBJECTS

Paper – I (Theory) Introduction to Geriatry 100 Marks
Paper –II (Theory) Basic Geriatric Care 100 Marks
Paper – III (Theory) Home Nursing Awareness 100 Marks
Paper – IV (Theory) Common diseases of elderly people 100 Marks
Paper – V (Practical) Internship / Viva / Project 100 Marks
Total 500 Marks

( A minimum of 40% marks required to get a pass. The internal assessment will be based on the parameters such as, participation in class, discipline, and performance in the examination )

SUGGESTED MINIMUM HOURS OF STUDY

Monday 3 hrs each day X 3 days = 9 hrs / week
Wednesday 9 hrs X 4 weeks = 36 hrs / month
Friday 36 hrs X 6 months = 216 hrs / 6 months
  1. During the period of 6 months both theory and practical of the prescribed syllabus, must be completed. (Theory 66 hrs + practical 150 hrs)
  2. 20 days of contact classes are compulsory, which must be conducted by a qualified doctor in Alopathy / Ayurveda / Homeo or a qualified and experienced Staff Nurse.
  3. No study materials will be supplied. The centre will make their own arrangements to impart coaching on the subjects by referring the related books of the notable authors through a qualified faculty appointed either on contract basis or on daily basis.
  4. A consent letter from such faculty affixing a photo thereon, may be obtained and forwarded to us, before starting the course at the centre.
  5. The course fee shown above is the minimum amount chargeable from the students. The centre can charge less or a little bit more of this amount, depends on the potentiality of the location / qualified faculty and other updated infrastructure facilities.
  6. All centres will ensure that both the theory and practical classes on regular basis are conducted only by a qualified and apt faculty entitled to teach this subject.
  7. The courses will be conducted only through the Authorized Training Centre of RETC.

PAPER – V PRACTICAL TRAINING (150 hrs)
  • Internship – Field Visits In Oldage Homes – Institutions – De–Addiction Centres For Exposure And Case Studies (Student Should Undergo A Training In Any Oldage Homes /De Addiction Centers And Such Other Institutions Of Ngos For A Period Of 30 Days.)
  • Short Term Placement In Hospitals And Bye-Stander (Not Less Than 6 Days/ 48 Hrs)

We will take all possible steps to help the students to undergo the practical training as detailed below anywhere in the state and also with the local assistance available from the locality of the home town of the student.

VIII. EXAMINATION

The examination will be conducted twice in a year. During May / June ( 1 st session )and November / December (2 nd session). The cutoff date for accepting the applications will be upto28th February and upto 31 st August, for the 1 st and 2 nd sessions respectively every year. The Authorized Training Centre where the student is admitted and continued his/her studies shall be the examination centre.

IX. ON DEMAND EXAMINATION (ODE)

On Demand Examination is based on the needs of the Individual Leaner. The flexibility in the examination system also helps a learner to pursue learning at his/her own pace of learning. The present system of conducting examinations only once, or Twice a year and on the fixed dates does not fully meet the criteria of openness and flexibility in learners evaluation. ODE allows the student to take examination when he/she is ready. ODE permits the student to choose the time of his / her examination. ODE reduces the threat of failure in examinations.

On satisfactory completion of the duration of the course, in any other standard and popular institutions earlier, based on credential documents filed by each student, theory and practical examination will be conducted either at Sub Centre or at any other places fixed by the coordinator of Master Centre at Kayamkulam according to the convenience and strength of students admitted. The course fee , examination fee & other fees fixed for regular mode of courses, will be the same as applicable to ODE programmes also.

The ODE facility is restricted only to the students, who completed the duration of a particular vocational course in the same field at any of the standard institutions earlier or, who do not have recognized certificate but had long service and experience in the field, he/she worked in any oldage homes De-addiction centres/ and such other activities.

  7. On completion of course a declaration of the head of the centre in the format to be sent along with the consolidated mark list and attendance sheet.
X. CERTIFICATION

On completion of course the student will be awarded a “DIPLOMA IN GERIATRIC / HOME NURSING CARE” by the authorities of RETC (central and state govt. approved institution with the accreditation of NIOS and affiliated with state resource centre Kerala, within 30 days last date of the examination is over)
